The municipality of The Hague is making another € 500.000 available this year for the exchange scheme for dirty diesel cars and mopeds and light mopeds. Alderman Liesbeth van Tongeren (Sustainability, Environment and Energy Transition) recently announced this. The scheme is part of the measures that ensure cleaner and healthier air in The Hague. Last year, good use was made of this, almost 2000 residents of The Hague opted for a cleaner form of transport. That is why it has been decided to continue the scheme this year.

Alderman Van Tongeren: “I talk to many people who are proud that their clean vehicle helps to keep the city liveable. In the city you see more and more bicycles, cargo bikes and e-vans. With this scheme we give residents a helping hand to also opt for a cleaner mode of transport ”

Residents who trade in their diesel car receive a credit of 1.000 euros. A moped or light moped provides a credit of 400 euros, and for residents of The Hague with an Ooievaarspas 750 euros. The credit can be used for an (electric) bicycle, an electric moped or light moped, traveling by public transport or for renting a shared car or public transport bicycle.

The scheme is in line with the expansions of the environmental zones that will be gradually introduced in the coming years. As of December 1, 2020, two-stroke mopeds and mopeds from before January 1, 2011 are no longer allowed to drive in The Hague. The environmental zone for diesels in the city center will apply from 1 July, where only passenger cars and vans from emission class 4 are allowed. These are diesel cars with a year of construction from approximately 2006. For diesel trucks, the existing environmental zone will then be expanded, and from 2022 only trucks and buses with emission class 6 will be allowed there. This concerns vehicles with a construction year from approximately 2014, according to Municipality of The Hague.
