More than ever, the Netherlands is diligently looking for campers and caravans for next summer. Over the past six months, Marktplaats has been searched for more than 9 million times for mobile holiday homes. This means that the keywords 'camper' and 'caravan' are the most searched words on Marktplaats at the moment, in addition to a fixed favorite 'free'. The trading site concludes this based on the search behavior of its visitors. The demand for motorhomes and caravans is rising so fast and fast that it is no longer possible for providers to keep up.
With an average of 10.000 motorhomes and caravans per month, the supply lags far behind the demand. Marktplaats also clearly sees the fact that this summer will once again be one of car and camping holidays. The Dutch searched almost 100.000 times for this in the past six months, more than doubling compared to the same period last year. Most wanted camping items are roof boxes, roof racks, camping tables and chairs.
With nearly six million searches in the first six months of 2021, motorhome is – after free – the most used search term on Marktplaats right now, closely followed by around 3.5 million searches for caravans. A significant increase compared to a year ago when the Dutch searched 2.6 million times for motorhomes and two million times for caravans in the same months.
It is striking that despite the increasing demand, the supply has not increased on the trading site in the past six months, but actually decreased. Just under 64.000 ads in the first six months of 2021 compared to 69.000 in 2020 in the same period last year. The most popular motorhome brands at the moment are Volkswagen, Ford and Fendt. “Every year from May onwards, we see an increase in the number of searches for motorhomes and caravans. This year the search started already in January and the demand still remains high. So strong that the offer is totally unmatched. We also hear this from the business providers on our platform," said spokesperson Maaike Veeling.
Summer camping 2021
In addition to the camper vans, the camping trend is also reflected in other camping equipment. For example, the Dutch also searched more often for a roof box, more than 500.000 searches versus 304.000 in the same period last year. The search behavior for a roof rack doubled (more than 40.000 versus 24.000). In the statistics of marktplaats It is also striking that the search for camping gear has increased in the past six months. The Dutch typed 'camping gear' almost 100.000 times in the search bar versus 43.000 times in the same period last year. The search behavior for a camping table has more than tripled (38.500 versus 14.500). We searched more than 15.000 times for a camping chair (5.700 last year).
