Children from Best who use school transport (about 180 students) can also choose to travel to school under supervision from now on by public transport. The municipality uses 'travel buddies' for this. These are supervisors who help the children to practice traveling by bus or train until the children can do it themselves. Similar 'travel buddies' have already been deployed elsewhere in the Netherlands.

The independent trade journal Passenger Transport Magazine writes that these travel buddies are deployed through welfare organisations. "It is also possible to have a volunteer from the student's network act as a supervisor," said the municipality, which pays for the costs of the public transport subscriptions for both to the Eindhovens Dagblad. “Independent travel contributes to the development of young people and increases independence. It can also be a prelude to independent travel to further education.”

The 'switch' from student transport to independent travel is not mandatory, emphasizes responsible alderman Ria van der Hamsvoord. “It is and remains a free choice. Some parents and children have already signed up. We will gain experience with this in the near future.” Children who cannot travel to school independently due to a disability or who attend special education are eligible. As well as students who have to travel very far to a school that suits their religion or philosophy.
