From Monday, license plate cameras will record whether moped riders in Amsterdam are riding on the road with a helmet. This trial lasts a year and, according to the municipality, is necessary because light mopeds have recently been less likely to comply with the rules.

In the capital, mopeds are no longer welcome on the bicycle path in many places since 2019, but they have to ride on the road with a helmet. An evaluation at the beginning of 2020 showed that the new rule has led to more safety in traffic, better traffic flow and less congestion on the bicycle paths. According to the municipality, the number of accidents involving light moped riders also decreased considerably.

For the time being, the existing license plate cameras will be used, but moveable cameras will also be added later. Anyone who breaks the rules will be fined. The cameras are an addition to the enforcement of boas on the street, who issue around a hundred fines a month.
