Almost everyone is familiar with the blue-yellow OV-fiets, the freedom to continue traveling by bike after, for example, you have used the bus or train. To be able to rent an OV-fiets, you need a personal OV-chipkaart. You put the free public transport bicycle subscription on this. If you have an NS Flex subscription, you can immediately use the OV-fiets. You can check in the NS app how many bicycles are available in your area or at the station and easily travel from door to door. Various new functionalities for the OV-fiets have also been added to the NS app, making renting an OV-fiets even easier. It turns out that almost forty percent of train passengers come to the station by bicycle.

There are currently approximately 21.700 public transport bicycles in the Netherlands. You can rent such a bicycle at almost 300 rental locations throughout the Netherlands, at many stations, at bus or metro stops and at P+R areas. Not much use has been made of the OV bikeThis was due to the corona crisis. Since April, the public transport bicycle has been back in the picture among travelers and more and more use is made of this mode of transport. NS reports that in the first quarter of this year, ninety percent of public transport bicycle rides had already returned to the level of the same period in 2019. Last month, the level of public transport bicycle rides was even almost ten percent higher than in the same month in 2019. .

We see that public transport bicycles are particularly popular at weekends and that travelers mainly use public transport bicycles for social or recreational activities, such as visiting family or a day out. More and more travelers are using the OV-fiets in their door-to-door journey."
