By taking preventive measures, we will hopefully be able to slow down the virus in time.

When it is up to the Minister of Health Kuipers, general corona measures such as a lockdown must be prevented. In any case, this means that specific measures must be ready for each sector. This is stated in the government's long-term strategy that was published. "It is in the interest of the sectors themselves to prepare with measures for scenarios in which the virus flares up," the cabinet said. In an explanation, Ernst Kuipers said that there is a very real chance that millions of Dutch people will become infected again after the summer.

precautionary actions

The taxi sector is the first to act. “By taking preventive measures, we will hopefully be able to slow down the virus sufficiently in time,” the cabinet writes. Work to be done for the KNV trade association, which must have detailed plans ready with its members. Do not give up and take action immediately and not when the need is high. The government's commitment places the responsibility with the sectors. It has now become clear that the same government will not have 'deep pockets' again in the next pandemic.

Many sectors now know what preventive measures they can take and already have plans ready for the next corona wave. But it is unclear for the cultural sector, the taxi sector and the catering industry what measures they should take and when. Nor do they know exactly when, if any, they are entitled to financial compensation. The various parties also want to know which measures are useful and which are not. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport states that it understands the questions from the sectors well.

The plan that Ernst Kuipers presented, say the policy plan for future corona waves, is only meager for health experts. Virologist Bert Niesters (UMC Groningen) wonders in the Telegraaf what about vaccines. Virologist Ab Osterhaus also lacks a clear vaccination plan.

But that does not matter at all, of course, because it is about preparing the Netherlands mentally for a new corona wave, so that the importance of the measures to be taken within the taxi sector is underlined. The omikron variants BA.4 and BA.5 appear to be rapidly becoming the dominant variants of the coronavirus in the Netherlands. This is evident from the latest figures and samples that are held among those who tested positive.
