The measure would cost about 100 million euros.

Federal Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) proposes to abolish VAT on transport tickets. That writes L'Avenir in its Monday edition. Today, the VAT on public transport tickets is still 6 percent. Eliminating VAT on tickets is therefore only a first step, the minister emphasizes.

"We also need more and more punctual trains. It is not a solution to have free trains, but they are always late. I have been working on strengthening the trains since the beginning of this legislature. We must continue to invest in the railways ."

If it is a small boost for the traveler, it gives a symbolic signal. For the federal government, the train must become the backbone of mobility. In October 2020, Gilkinet resigned as party leader to become Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and NMBS in the De Croo government.
