Rijkswaterstaat awards Heijmans Variable Maintenance for the roads in the East of the Netherlands.

Heijmans has concluded an important agreement with Rijkswaterstaat for the performance of variable maintenance on roads and structures in South Gelderland and South Overijssel. These regions, referred to as the East Netherlands plot South, include all Rijkswaterstaat roads south of the A1 in the relevant provinces.

The award of this contract, with a value of approximately 125 million euros, to Heijmans is mainly due to their proposed approach for determining the maintenance task and the required cooperation within the maintenance chain. This approach is characteristic of their working method and was also applied in the recently accepted A2-A12 project around Utrecht.

“We offer comparable sustainability standards for maintenance work as for the recently accepted A2-A12 project around Utrecht. It is only logical that the maintenance tasks of these national highways will also be carried out according to high sustainability standards, with the largest part using circular asphalt. We are therefore pleased with the confidence that Rijkswaterstaat also has in us for this project.”

During the four-year framework agreement, Heijmans will not only be responsible for the implementation, but also for the process management of the Variable Maintenance. Six central values are paramount: safety, availability, reliability, customer satisfaction, sustainability, environmental awareness and assurance of network quality. Every year, Heijmans will map the maintenance chain to jointly determine the planning and execution of the work, which ensures optimal cooperation and flexibility.

Bart Smolders, chairman of Heijmans Infra, emphasizes the importance of sustainability in this project. The emphasis on the use of circular asphalt is an important part of this vision. The circular asphalt, which contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions, fits within the broader sustainability objectives of both Heijmans and Rijkswaterstaat. This is in line with the national trend of making infrastructure more sustainable.

The maintenance contract covers all highways, motorways and structures south of the A1 in the Overijssel and Gelderland-Zuid regions. This includes major and life-extending maintenance on 272 km of national highways, including the maintenance of bridges and viaducts, such as refurbishing railings, replacing joints and concrete repairs.
