Outgoing Minister Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management appointed Arib last week for a period of four years.

Khadija Arib has been appointed as the new chairman of the Social Council Schiphol (MRS). The MRS, which was established on July 1, 2023, plays a crucial role in advising the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management on matters that affect the Schiphol area. Arib's appointment, which takes effect on March 1, is a sign of confidence in her ability to improve the quality of the living environment around the airport

Arib's career, characterized by her commitment to public affairs, has prepared her for this new challenge. Her period in the House of Representatives was abruptly ended after allegations of inappropriate behavior, with an investigation into her behavior revealing negative findings. Despite these controversies, Arib's appointment as chairman of the MRS is seen as a step forward in the representation of local residents and social organizations in discussions about Schiphol.

The MRS consists of representatives of local residents, experts, scientists and social organizations, including nature and environmental organizations. This diversity in perspectives is essential for formulating advice that takes into account the different interests surrounding Schiphol. Arib's experience and network in politics are seen as valuable contributions to the council. Its main task will be to find a balance between the economic interests of the airport and the quality of life of the surrounding areas.

Since 2023, the MRS has provided solicited and unsolicited advice to outgoing Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers about the airport.

Arib's appointment comes at a time when the discussion surrounding Schiphol's impact on the environment and the quality of life of nearby communities is intensifying. The airport's expansion and increasing flights have raised concerns about noise pollution and environmental impact. The role of the MRS, and by extension that of Arib, will be crucial in advising the government on these issues, with a view to a sustainable future for the airport and its surroundings.

Arib's appointment is not without controversy, given her recent political history. Her departure from the House of Representatives, following accusations of inappropriate behavior, casts a shadow over her new role. Nevertheless, outgoing Minister Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management emphasizes confidence in Arib's abilities to lead the MRS. Her extensive experience and political network are considered essential for promoting dialogue between Schiphol, the government, and the community.

Arib's appointment as chair of the MRS marks a new phase in her long career in public service. Her past in politics, while not without controversy, offers her a unique perspective on the complex relationship between government, industry and community. Her role will be crucial in the ongoing discussion about the future of Schiphol and its impact on the environment.
