In times of the corona pandemic, airlines try to respond to changing aviation and the needs of travelers. Many people do not dare to fly for fear of contamination with the corona virus. Passengers are required to wear a face mask but sit side by side on an airplane. Every week, passengers arrive at airports that are infected with corona. The German low-cost airline Eurowings with its headquarters in Düsseldorf (Germany), arranges an empty middle seat for travelers who need it for an additional fee. This German airline is part of the Lufthansa Group. Eurowings has hubs at the airports of Cologne-Bonn, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Eurowings has conducted a test in recent weeks with the provision of an empty middle seat to passengers. More than five thousand center seats have been 'sold'. Eurowings is the first German airline to allow passengers to book an empty middle seat prior to the flight.

Travelers who fly with this airline and do not want a direct passenger next to them during these corona times, can book this empty middle seat from eighteen euros per flight. This empty center seat service is available at all Eurowings routes within Europe and of course subject to availability. If a passenger books this empty middle seat, the seat will be blocked and guaranteed not to be given away to another passenger. This can now only be booked via the Eurowings Service Center, from September this can also be booked online. Eurowings already offered the empty middle seat as standard for travelers with a BIZ Class ticket. Apparently many passengers still need space in an airplane in times of corona, despite the mandatory mouth masks.

'The positive feedback during the test phase showed us very clearly that our guests often want more comfort and distance on board. Ultra-Low Cost has not worked since Corona, at least not in our home market of Germany. We therefore assume that the empty middle seat will be a very important product when traveling in the future, ”says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof.
