The ANWB has recently tested all-season tires in the large size 235/55 R17 with various sister clubs. The strict test requirements set by the sister clubs in the countries around us for driving in winter conditions ensure that a maximum of two stars out of five is scored in this size. However, there is no reason for the ANWB to immediately discourage the use of these tires in the Netherlands. Under Dutch weather conditions in winter with a lot of rain, these all-season tires score sufficient to good. They are safer than driving all year round with sets of summer and / or winter tires. It also saves a change from summer to winter tires.

Only vehicles with larger tire sizes and with more power may fail all-season tires. Some of the tires tested are not good enough under summer conditions. Going on winter sports is not recommended for all large sizes. For the smaller tire sizes it is a different story, as test results from previous tire tests show. From 2014 onwards, all-season tires in the small (175/65 R14) and two medium (195/65 R15 and 205/55 R16) sizes have been tested. Many of these tires often achieved three stars with the strict requirements for winter conditions.

All-season tires have been found to work better on small cars and in smaller tire sizes. All-season tires (4-seasons) are a type of tire where compromises are made between the advantages and disadvantages of the summer and winter tire. For example, the tire has clear advantages over a summer tire in winter, but also clear shortcomings compared to a winter tire in winter. But it performs considerably better than a winter tire in the summer.

Whether such a compromise is satisfactory is ultimately decided by the consumer. With the tire test, the ANWB help in deciding whether, and if so which, all-season tire is the best buy. The ANWB tests summer and winter tires and all-season tires every year. All properties, such as driving characteristics, braking behavior, wear and fuel consumption, are examined.
