Who actually wants to travel by plane in these uncertain times? The uncertainty regarding the corona virus means that many people no longer want to fly. People still wonder whether traveling by plane in times of a corona crisis is safe, they are afraid of getting infected with the corona virus on the plane. Various airlines try to entice travelers to buy an airline ticket with dump prices. The government is immensely annoyed by the dump prices for airline tickets to orange areas that have been offered by various airlines for a long time. The airlines are doing everything they can to rake in some money in these difficult and difficult times.

In a letter to parliament, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen (Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management) recently informed the House of Representatives about air travel for dump prices for airline tickets to orange areas. MP Amhaouch of the CDA had asked the government to investigate the possibilities of stopping or preventing dump prices of airline tickets to areas where an orange travel advice is in force. The government advises not to travel to orange areas.

“I think it is undesirable that airlines offer flights to areas with an orange travel advice at sometimes very low rates. The cabinet calls on everyone not to travel to areas with an orange travel advice for reasons other than a necessary trip. Traveling abroad is and remains a risk in the current situation due to the spread of the corona virus. In the letter to your House of 14 October last, it was further explained that the cabinet is doing everything within its power to strongly discourage and therefore discourage holidays to these areas, ”Cora van Nieuwenhuizen said in the letter to the House of Representatives.

Minister van Nieuwenhuizen says in the letter to parliament to have obtained legal information about the possibilities to prevent airlines from applying dump prices for airline tickets to countries where an orange travel advice applies. The conclusion is that the sector-specific international transport regulations do not provide a basis for taking national measures against these types of low rates for airline tickets to orange areas.

Airlines can set their own rates. The conclusion is that the cabinet cannot prohibit the dumping prices of airline tickets to orange areas. The Minister has raised the problem surrounding airline tickets with the European Commission and the other member states. They will further investigate whether there are possibilities to take measures against these types of practices.
