From 1 July, the center of The Hague will be given an environmental zone. Old, polluting diesel cars are then no longer allowed into the center. Alderman Liesbeth van Tongeren (Sustainability and Energy Transition) recently announced this. The environmental zone was already announced in 2019 in the policy document on clean transport, and the Commission has now definitively adopted it. After the introduction, only cleaner passenger and delivery vans from emission class 4 are welcome. These are diesel cars with a year of manufacture from 2006.

Van Tongeren: “Clean air is important for the health of all residents of The Hague. That is why we encourage clean transport - such as public transport and electric vehicles - and step by step fend off polluting vehicles. ”

The boundary of the environmental zone is the center ring - to which the telderstrace has been added on the north side. The Hague follows the national guidelines for environmental zones, so that they are all the same in the Netherlands and there is no patchwork of different rules.

To make it easier for owners to opt for a cleaner alternative, the councilor has previously set up an exchange scheme. Residents who trade in a diesel car or van will receive a credit of E1000, which can be used for an (electric) bicycle or cargo bike, the use of a shared car, an electric moped or light moped or a public transport credit. Many residents of The Hague already made use of the scheme. The Municipality of The Hague reports this on their website.
