Many Dutch are looking forward to going on vacation. However, it is not yet clear whether a holiday abroad is possible. Many people therefore choose to camp in their own country, or wait until just before the summer to book their camping holiday abroad. Small campsites in natural surroundings are particularly popular, according to research by ANWB Kamperen. More and more campers are opting for a cottage or mobile home (28%). After the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain follow as the most favorite camping destination.
The popularity of camping has been increasing since 2020. Of the respondents, 11% indicate that they rather consider a camping holiday in Corona. This is remarkable because the camping market has been virtually stable over the past few years. It is mainly families with young children who are more interested in camping due to corona (17%).
Camping plans
About 40% of the campers already have plans for the coming camping season. About 25% have already actually booked. The option to cancel free of charge is decisive. The Netherlands is still the most popular destination for the 2021 camping season. About 37% of campers choose their own country. France ranks first as a foreign destination with 33%. Italy and Spain follow with 25% and 21% respectively. As many as three quarters of the campers intend to go on vacation for at least two weeks.
Mobile home and cottage popular
Small nature campsites will also remain popular in 2021. Interest in staying in a cottage or mobile home is increasing. About 28% of the campers prefer this. Last year that number was still 20%. Campers choose this form because they want more luxury. In addition, having your own sanitary facilities plays an important role.
Corona label
In 2020, the ANWB introduced the corona label for campsites. The label will also remain visible on anwb.nl next season. Campers can see at a glance whether the campsite of their choice has taken corona measures and applies favorable booking conditions, according to the ANWB on their website.
