As of April 30, 2021, a recycling fee will be levied on all cars for which a Dutch registration is requested. The recycling fee will then not only apply to new cars, but also to cars that are imported from abroad and are given a Dutch registration number for the first time. This means that approximately 200.000 cars can be recycled sustainably every year.

The recycling contribution is a one-off contribution on top of the purchase price of a passenger car or light commercial vehicle. The money that is collected will benefit responsible and high-quality car recycling. A recycling fee is already levied on most cars in the Netherlands. From April 30, 2021, this will apply to all cars, including imported cars, regardless of whether these are new or old cars and regardless of whether they are imported by a private or garage company. Since 1 January 2021, the recycling fee has been € 30 per car.

What will the money be used for?

Thanks to the money collected with the recycling contribution, ARN, together with some 300 recycling partners, can recycle cars in a responsible and high-quality manner throughout the Netherlands. In recent years, more than 200.000 end-of-life cars have been sustainably recycled, with almost all materials being reused. In total, that is about 187 million kilos of materials every year. This allowed car dismantling, shredding and recycling companies to achieve a recycling percentage of over 98 percent in recent years. It is not without reason that ARN says: "together we make something beautiful out of it!"

How is it arranged?

In case of parallel import, the collection of the recycling fee is carried out by the RDW, the organization that takes care of the registration of motorized vehicles and driving licenses in the Netherlands. When applying for a registration number for a parallel imported car, the applicant pays the recycling fee via the RDW. More about this can be found at www.wemakeneritsmooisvan.nl. The importer pays the recycling fee paid by the customer to ARN on new cars.
