Heathrow passengers can reduce their flight emissions by up to 80% for the first time 1. Vitol Aviation, a fuel supplier at Heathrow, is making Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ available ahead of the G7 Summit to be held June 11-13, 2021. Glasgow with lower emissions.

“We continuously support the aviation industry in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are delighted that Vitol is enabling Neste MY SAF to be used at Heathrow, one of the leading global hub airports. We are also proud to play a part in helping lower emissions travel to the G7 conference, where sustainability will be one of the key topics.”

Vitol Aviation's expertise in specialist aviation fuel handling will be combined with Neste's industry-leading SAF manufacturing capabilities. Neste MY SAF is produced 100% from renewable and sustainable waste and residual raw materials, such as used frying fat and animal fat waste. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, in its neat form and over its life cycle, reduces up to 80% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to using fossil aviation fuel 1

“Sustainability has always been important to us as a supplier, and to airlines and their passengers. We are delighted to be the first to supply sustainable aviation fuel to Heathrow. While this is a trial or concept, it shows how low-emission options for flying are feasible. We are looking at how we can use our expertise to offer more sustainable options.”

The fuel, which will be blended upstream from the airport, will be incorporated into the airport's main fuel supply from 3 June and made available for use on Heathrow flights in the coming days. While the fuel supply may be relatively small (equivalent to refueling up to 10 short-haul flights), it serves as a pilot or concept for more flights to be operated in the future with SAF at the UK's hub airport, it said. Next.

“We are delighted that Heathrow is the first major airport in the UK to successfully integrate sustainable aviation fuels into its operations. As we prepare to welcome the world to G7, we can show how this technology can significantly reduce aviation carbon while protecting its benefits. The UK government now has the opportunity to create a new UK growth industry by supporting sustainable aviation fuel production and also be leaders in the race to a net zero 2050. Now is the time for less talk and more action and ministers should follow the example of countries like the US and mandate that a minimum of 10% sustainable fuel use by airlines is required by 2030, rising to at least 50% by 2050.”
