Not all tram tracks and tram stops in The Hague are suitable for low-floor trams.

The municipality, the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area and HTM are working together on the public transport of the future. For tram lines 6 and 12, sketches are made for the necessary adjustments. And tram line 16 is now being worked on. Low-floor trams run in the city. These trams are more accessible for people in a wheelchair or with a walker. This way, more people can ride the tram independently. The HTM is going to buy even more low-floor trams. These will replace the outdated trams that are still running there.

Not all tram tracks and tram stops in The Hague are suitable for low-floor trams. That is why the rails have to be moved in many streets. Also some curves are adjusted. Adjustments are necessary for tram lines 6, 12, 16 and 1. The stops are also adjusted† They are made longer and suitable for people with a wheelchair or walker.

Where possible, the municipality will combine the renewal of the tram lines with other work. For example, refurbishing squares, roads, bridges and quays. In the first half of 2022, the sketches will be worked out for line 6, Schilderswijk and Transvaal and for line 12, Regentessekwartier and Valkenboskwartier. The sketches for line 12, Bomen- en Bloemenbuurt, Vogelwijk and Duindorp will be elaborated in the second half of 2. The elaboration will be done together with residents, entrepreneurs and interest groups.

low-floor trams are replacing the outdated trams

In the The Hague – Rotterdam region there will be an additional 2040 inhabitants by 400.000. About 100.000 of these will live in The Hague and the surrounding area. These residents also travel: for work, school, visits and relaxation, for example. OV NEXT is working on the public transport of the future: accessible to everyone, with short journey times and door-to-door transport. The goal of OV NEXT is that people will travel more often with public transport and with means of transport that you share with others. The intention is also that people will cycle and walk more often instead of traveling by car.

The red-beige trams have been running through the Hague region for 40 years. Now they are obsolete. These trams are also not easily accessible for people with disabilities or travelers with a pram or suitcase. That is why there are new, spacious trams. These trams can carry more people. The low floors make it easy and quick for everyone to get in. As a result, the trams can also leave a stop faster and the travel time is shorter.
