Meetjesland

Assenede is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality is located in the Meetjesland region, is composed of four boroughs and has a total of about 14.200 inhabitants, who are called Assenedenaars. Assenede is popularly referred to as “Asnee”, which in oral communication can lead to confusion with the Leiedorp Afsnee near Ghent, which it has nothing to do with.

The Meetjesland has a rich fair tradition, every village or neighborhood has its own parties, races, fairs and so on. In the past, weeks in advance fairground posters hung out to announce the festivities. Many of those old fairground posters are kept in the archives of the municipalities. They are now witnesses to this rich cultural tradition. In 2018, the archive service of Welzijnsband Meetjesland started a collaboration with COMEET (Cultuuroverleg Meetjesland) to map the historical archives of the Meetjesland. During the working visits to the archives, it soon became apparent that every municipality keeps beautiful fairground posters in the archives.

No fewer than 700 copies were registered during the archive round, some dating back to the 19th centuryde century. These copies inspired the collaboration partners to create a real Meetjeslands project to introduce these heritage pieces to the public. The exhibition can be viewed until Tuesday 06.07.2021 in the Bijenkorf, Sportstraat 4 in Assenede.

what could be more beautiful at the fair than a father taking his son to the shooting range?

The Netherlands

Dutch fairs are also allowed again from Wednesday 30 June. There are still corona restrictions, such as keeping one and a half meters away. The number of visitors must also be regulated. Many large fairs are already planned for the months of July and August. Fair operators will try to make up for the lost spring in the summer months. The Dutch fairground world has stood still for no less than 259 days.
