333 primary schools in the Netherlands are taking part in the election 'An ANWB Traffic plaza for a schoolyard'. In a traffic circle, children learn in a safe environment how to deal with different traffic situations. As of today, anyone can vote at the primary school they believe deserves an ANWB Traffic Square. One primary school wins per province. Voting is possible until Thursday 10 June. The twelve winners will receive an ANWB Traffic Square at the start of the next school year. In a traffic circle, children gain experience with traffic skills in a safe environment, such as crossing the road, taking sharp bends by bicycle, overtaking other road users and entering a roundabout safely.

“Children have to make as many meters as possible in traffic. They will then be more aware of the dangers and will therefore be able to cycle to school independently and, above all, safely. ”

A recent survey by the ANWB shows that about half of the teachers and road users think that the bicycle safety of children has decreased. Research by Veilig Verkeer Nederland in 2020 also shows that six in ten children are taken to school by car. It is remarkable that 95% of these children live within a radius of five kilometers. The schools that win an ANWB Traffic Square will also receive a teaching package with assignments for the children. The election: 'An ANWB Traffic plaza in front of a schoolyard' is part of the campaign: 'Every child safely on a bike'. The traffic squares of the ANWB are used by the ANWB Fund funded.
